No, you aren't missing anything!  The JIRA registration mechanism has some undocumented "features" that make it a PITA.

Algorithm:

  1. Codehaus main page ->
  2. Xircles page ->
  3. Xircles signup
  4. Pick a username & write it down, also your password
  5. Get the verification email and verify yourself
  6. You are now logged into xircles.codehaus.org.  Note that there is no link to this page from the codehaus.org main page.
  7. In the top center of the page, do a search on "groovy" and click on the first result.  You are now at http://xircles.codehaus.org/projects/groovy
  8. In the left nav pane, click on JIRA.  This takes you to http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GROOVY
  9. In the upper-right corner, click "log in" (you must log into JIRA separately from Xircles)
  10. Use your username/password.  You should now be logged into JIRA
I don't know why this is so complicated.  It kept me from contributing to Groovy for months.  I occasionally see emails like yours (I've sent them, too!) wondering what is going on with the Codehaus.org website.  I have also had trouble with Xircles, not just JIRA.  Also, if you ever forget your username and/or password, the password reset feature does not seem to work correctly, either!

On a related note, Xircles suspended my Grails mailing list subscription for about 3 months, then it suddenly started back up for no reason!

Please write back if the above algorithm doesn't work or if I've forgotten a stop.
Alan Thompson

P.S.  In one instance (I think password reset) I had to guess that the username it wanted is not your entire email address, but just the part before the @ symbol (one of the "features").  If you ever get really stuck, this may help you.
