Groovy in the top 20 of the TIOBE language index

Hi all,

Here's the little buzz of the day, as Groovy enters the top 20 of the TIOBE programming language index for the first time:

Here's an extract of the site above (emphasis mine):

Programming language Groovy enters the top 20 for the first time. Groovy is an object-oriented scripting language that runs on the Java Virtual Machine. It is fully compatible with Java, making it easy to combine Java programs with Groovy. There is quite some competition in this field of lightweight languages that fit together with Java. Groovy beats other well-known JVM languages such as Scala (#36), JavaFX Script (#41) and Clojure (#76). Let's see whether it can keep its top 20 position the next few months.

There was a lot of buzz around Groovy at the SpringOne2GX conference last month, with the strong Groovy push in the Spring.IO stack, that certainly helped improved the ranking in the various search engines used by TIOBE to rank languages.

The last remark of the quoted paragraph is spot on, as the ranking in the index refers more to the buzz or hype around the language than actual usage, so the ranking vary greatly month after month. Groovy's usually been between 30th and 55th or so, so it's going to be interesting to see if the buzz helps us keep that position in the coming months.

Anyhow, don't read too much into those numbers, as such a big variation, IMHO, hints at a problem of reliability of that index :-)

But with 1.7 million downloads of Groovy last year, Groovy is definitely a strong language!

Big thanks to the whole Groovy community and ecosystem for their commitment and support! Without you, Groovy would certainly not be where it is today!
